Ordering concrete can feel complicated, especially when you are trying to work out exactly how much you need for a domestic project. Order too little and you risk delays halfway through the job. Order too much and you may end up paying for material you do not use.

Whether you are laying a new driveway, building a garden patio, installing a shed base or preparing foundations for an extension, calculating the required amount of concrete is one of the most important steps in planning the work.

At Sheridan Concrete, we supply fresh concrete across Manchester and Greater Manchester for both domestic and commercial projects, with flexible delivery options and support available when you are unsure how much material your job will require.

How Is Concrete Measured?

Concrete is normally measured in cubic metres, written as m³.

To calculate the approximate amount of concrete required for a simple rectangular area, you need three measurements:

Length of the area in metres

Width of the area in metres

Required concrete depth in metres

The calculation is:

Length × Width × Depth = Cubic Metres of Concrete Required

For example, a shed base measuring 4 metres long, 3 metres wide and 100mm deep would be calculated as follows:

4m × 3m × 0.1m = 1.2m³

This means the project would require approximately 1.2 cubic metres of concrete.

Remember that measurements need to be converted into metres. For example, 100mm becomes 0.1m and 150mm becomes 0.15m.

How Much Concrete Do I Need for a Shed Base?

A concrete shed base provides a strong, level surface for sheds, garden buildings and small outdoor structures.

The amount of concrete required will depend on the size of the shed and the depth of the base. As an example:

A 3m x 2m shed base at 100mm depth requires approximately 0.6m³ of concrete.

A 4m x 3m shed base at 100mm depth requires approximately 1.2m³ of concrete.

A 5m x 4m garden building base at 100mm depth requires approximately 2m³ of concrete.

For shed bases and lighter domestic projects, it is still important to prepare the ground correctly before the concrete is poured. A stable sub-base and suitable depth will help reduce movement, cracking and uneven surfaces over time.

How Much Concrete Do I Need for a Patio?

Concrete patios provide a durable base for outdoor seating areas, paving finishes and garden improvements.

The required volume depends on the size and planned depth of the patio. For example:

A 4m x 3m patio at 100mm depth requires approximately 1.2m³.

A 5m x 4m patio at 100mm depth requires approximately 2m³.

A 6m x 4m patio at 100mm depth requires approximately 2.4m³.

Patios can vary significantly depending on the design, access to the garden and whether the concrete is being used as the finished surface or as a base for another material.

For homes with restricted rear access, barrow mix concrete can be particularly useful, as the concrete can be mixed fresh and transported directly to the required pour location.

How Much Concrete Do I Need for a Driveway?

Driveways usually require a larger amount of concrete than patios or shed bases, as they need to support the weight of vehicles and withstand regular use.

For example:

A small 5m x 3m driveway at 150mm depth requires approximately 2.25m³.

A 6m x 4m driveway at 150mm depth requires approximately 3.6m³.

A 10m x 5m driveway at 150mm depth requires approximately 7.5m³.

The appropriate depth and concrete specification for a driveway can depend on the expected vehicle weight, ground conditions and overall design of the installation. Before ordering, it is always sensible to check that the planned depth and concrete mix are suitable for the project.

Sheridan Concrete can advise on suitable options for domestic driveway projects across Manchester and the surrounding areas.

How Much Concrete Do I Need for Foundations?

Concrete foundations and footings are essential for extensions, garden walls, garages and other structural projects.

Unlike a simple patio or shed base, foundation calculations may involve trenches, varying depths and specific strength requirements. As an example, a foundation trench measuring 10 metres long, 0.6 metres wide and 0.75 metres deep would require:

10m × 0.6m × 0.75m = 4.5m³

However, foundation specifications should always follow the appropriate building plans, structural guidance or Building Control requirements where applicable.

For this type of work, ordering the correct concrete grade and quantity is especially important, as foundations are responsible for supporting the structure above them.

Should I Allow Extra Concrete When Ordering?

Even with accurate measurements, there can be small variations in the ground, trench depth or prepared area. This means the real amount required may differ slightly from the initial calculation.

Ordering concrete mixed fresh on-site can help reduce the risk of waste, because you are not relying entirely on a fixed pre-ordered amount. With Sheridan Concrete’s barrow mix service, you only pay for the concrete you use, making it a practical choice for projects where precise requirements may vary once the pour begins.

This can be especially useful for:

Garden renovations

House extensions

Driveways

Foundations and footings

Restricted-access properties

Smaller domestic construction projects

Every delivery, every job, and every interaction with our customers is an opportunity to prove that we are reliable, professional, and committed to doing things right the first time.

We’re proud of the reputation we’ve built, and even prouder of the feedback our customers continue to share with us.

From turning up on time and keeping clients informed, to going the extra mile on-site, our drivers and operators take real pride in their work. Whether it’s carefully barrowing concrete into place or making sure quantities are spot-on, we understand that these details matter.

One customer with over 30 years of experience using concrete companies described us as “the best”, praising our accuracy, efficiency, and the professionalism of our team. Others have commended our staff for their fantastic attitude, reliability, and willingness to go above and beyond to get the job done right.

“Never used Sheridan Concrete before but very impressed Eddie and Colby absolutely fantastic turned upon time rang me beforehand to tell me what time they’re coming barrowed everything

Offering competitive pricing and real value is just as important, and we’re pleased to hear customers recognising that too—especially when comparing us to other providers.

“Highly recommend this local family run firm. Also, nothing was too much trouble for the lads on the barrows, despite the distance they had to go to pour the concrete.”

But we don’t take any of this for granted.

At Sheridan Concrete, we’re used to pouring with precision, but this time, it wasn’t pints behind the bar; it was 7m³ of high-quality concrete for a contractor working on a former pub site in Hulme, Manchester (Guildhall Close, M15 6SY). – The Old Abbey Taphouse

🍻 From Pulling Pints to Pouring Concrete

This particular site has a bit of local history. However, the pub sadly closed its doors at the beginning of March, leaving many wondering what’s next for the space. While the taps may have run dry for now, we’ve been on-site helping lay the groundwork, quite literally, for whatever comes next.

🏗️ The Job: 7m³ Cube Concrete Pour in Hulme

Working alongside a trusted contractor, our team delivered a 7m³ concrete pour, ensuring everything ran as smoothly as a perfectly pulled lager.

What we focused on:

✔️ Efficient delivery & pour timing – no delays, no wasted mix

✔️ Consistent quality concrete – strong, reliable, and built to last

✔️ Seamless coordination on-site – keeping the project flowing

Just like a busy bar on a Friday night, it’s all about keeping things moving without compromising quality.

🔧 Why Concrete Pouring Is Like Pouring the Perfect Pint

It might sound like a stretch, but hear us out:

Too fast? You ruin the finish (or the head on your pint)

Too slow? You lose consistency and timing

Wrong mix? The whole thing’s off

Whether it’s a creamy stout or a structural slab, getting the balance right is what separates average from exceptional.

👀 What’s Next for The Old Abby Taphouse

Right now, the future of the building remains uncertain. With the pub now closed, there’s speculation about redevelopment or a new business taking over the space.

At Sheridan Concrete, we’re keeping a close eye on things, and if we’re called back to pour again, you’ll hear it from us first.

Concrete is used in almost every type of construction project, from small home improvements to large commercial developments. While the material itself may be the same, the way it’s used in domestic and commercial builds can be quite different.

At Sheridan Concrete, we supply concrete for a wide range of projects, and one of the most common questions we hear is about the difference between residential and commercial concrete. Understanding those differences can help ensure your project gets the right mix, the right strength, and the best results.

Domestic Concrete Projects

Domestic concrete is used for residential properties and home improvement projects. These jobs are usually smaller in scale but still require strong, reliable materials to ensure they last for years.

Common domestic concrete uses include:

Driveways

Patios

Garden paths

Shed and garage bases

Foundations for home extensions

For homeowners, appearance is often just as important as durability. A driveway or patio is a visible part of the property, so achieving a clean finish and the right level surface is key.

Domestic projects also tend to involve lighter loads. For example, a driveway mainly needs to support cars and light vehicles, so the concrete mix can be designed with that in mind.

Commercial Concrete Projects

Commercial concrete is used in larger construction projects, such as warehouses, office buildings, retail spaces, and industrial sites.

These projects often require concrete for:

Building foundations

Structural slabs

Warehouse and factory floors

Car parks

Loading bays and yards

Unlike domestic projects, commercial builds usually involve heavier loads and higher traffic levels. Surfaces may need to withstand forklifts, delivery vehicles, machinery, and constant daily use.

Because of this, commercial concrete mixes are typically designed to provide greater strength and durability.

The Main Differences

Although domestic and commercial concrete may look similar once installed, there are a few important differences behind the scenes.

Strength and Load Capacity

Residential concrete is designed to handle everyday household use, such as vehicles and foot traffic.

Commercial concrete often needs to support significantly heavier loads, so stronger mixes and additional reinforcement are commonly required.

Project Size

Domestic projects are generally smaller, such as installing a patio or pouring a driveway.

Commercial jobs can involve much larger volumes of concrete, sometimes poured across large floor areas or multiple phases of construction.

Reinforcement

Some domestic concrete projects include reinforcement such as mesh, but commercial builds often require more extensive structural reinforcement to meet engineering specifications.

Finishing

For domestic builds, the finish is often a key consideration. Homeowners may choose decorative or smooth finishes to improve the appearance of their property.

40m³ Continuous Pumped Delivery

Delivering concrete to busy construction sites requires careful planning, reliable logistics, and the right equipment on the ground. Recently, Sheridan Concrete completed a large 40m³ concrete pour for Manchester Property Group, using a telescopic concrete pump to ensure efficient placement and a continuous flow across the site.

Planning the Pour

Large-scale pours demand more than just supplying concrete. For this project, our team worked closely with the site manager to plan the delivery schedule in advance. Using our route planning system, we organised the deliveries so that each mixer arrived in sequence, keeping the pump continuously supplied and avoiding any downtime during the pour.

Continuous pouring is essential for structural integrity and efficiency on projects of this scale. By coordinating the logistics ahead of time, we ensured that the concrete could be placed smoothly without delays or cold joints forming.

Telescopic Pump for Efficient Placement

Due to the size and layout of the site, a telescopic concrete pump was used to place the concrete accurately and quickly. Pumped concrete allows the material to reach areas that would otherwise be difficult to access with traditional methods.

The pump’s extended reach meant the team could maintain a steady workflow while reducing manual handling on site, helping the crew maintain both productivity and safety throughout the operation.

Keeping the Concrete Flowing

For a 40 cubic metre pour, timing is critical. Our route planning ensured that the mixers arrived in a controlled sequence, meaning the pump operator always had fresh concrete available. This continuous flow kept the project moving efficiently and allowed the team to complete the pour quickly.

By working closely with the site manager, we were able to align delivery timings with the site schedule, helping the construction team maintain progress without disruption.

Supporting Construction Projects Across Greater Manchester

Projects like this highlight the importance of reliable concrete supply and experienced coordination. At Sheridan Concrete, we regularly support contractors, developers, and site managers across Manchester and the surrounding areas, delivering ready-mix concrete for projects of all sizes.

Whether it’s a large commercial pour or a residential foundation, our team focuses on reliable delivery, efficient logistics, and high-quality concrete supply to keep projects running smoothly.

Concrete is one of the most widely used construction materials in the world. From domestic driveways to large commercial infrastructure, choosing the right concrete mix is essential for ensuring durability, structural integrity, and long-term performance.

Different concrete mixes are designed with varying strengths and properties depending on the intended application. In this guide, we explain the most common concrete mix types used in the UK and where they are typically used.

What Determines a Concrete Mix Type?

Concrete is made from a combination of cement, water, sand, and aggregates. When mixed together, a chemical reaction called hydration occurs, causing the material to harden and gradually gain strength over time.

Concrete mixes are commonly classified by compressive strength, which is measured in Newtons per square millimetre (N/mm²) after 28 days. For example, a C25 mix means the concrete has a strength of 25 N/mm² after curing.

The higher the number, the stronger and more durable the concrete.

Common Concrete Mix Types and Their Uses

Below are the most commonly used concrete grades in domestic, commercial, and industrial construction.

C10 Concrete

C10 is a low-strength mix typically used for non-structural applications.

Typical uses

Patio slabs

Pathways

Kerb bedding

Drainage works

Because it has a lower cement content, it is best suited to projects that do not require structural strength.

C15 Concrete

C15 provides slightly more strength than C10 and is often used for ground preparation or foundation layers.

Typical uses

Floor blinding

It is frequently used as a base layer before stronger concrete is poured above it.

C20 Concrete

C20 is one of the most popular mixes for domestic construction projects.

Typical uses

House foundations

Shed bases

Internal floor slabs

It offers a good balance between strength and cost, making it ideal for residential projects where heavy structural loads are not present.

C25 Concrete

C25 is a multi-purpose concrete mix commonly used in both domestic and commercial construction.

Typical uses

House footings and foundations

Specialist Concrete Mixes

In addition to standard mixes, some projects require specialist concrete with enhanced properties.

Fibre-Reinforced Concrete

This mix includes synthetic or steel fibres to improve strength and reduce cracking, making it ideal for high-traffic areas such as warehouses and industrial floors.

Waterproof Concrete

Designed with additives that prevent water penetration, waterproof concrete is often used in basements, foundations, and underground structures.

Air-Entrained Concrete

This mix contains tiny air bubbles that help protect the concrete from freeze-thaw cycles, making it suitable for outdoor paving and exposed surfaces.

Choosing the Right Concrete for Your Project

Selecting the correct concrete mix depends on several factors:

The weight the concrete must support

The type of construction project

Whether the concrete will be reinforced

Whether it’s a straightforward driveway pour or a tricky access job that others shy away from.

Recently, we tackled a delivery in Macclesfield that really showed what teamwork and experience can achieve.

8 Cubes and a Sloping Site

A contractor in Macclesfield called us needing 8 m³ (eight cubic tonnes) of concrete delivered on short notice. This sounds simple enough, except the pour point was down a steep slope, with no easy vehicle access and limited space for manoeuvring.

A standard mixer truck wasn’t going to get the job done, so our team put their heads together and came up with a plan.

Creative Thinking on Site

Instead of forcing bulky equipment into a spot that wasn’t suitable, we opted for our trusted barrow mix service. With barrow mixes, we batch the concrete on site and wheel it exactly where it’s needed, the ideal choice for restricted or uneven terrain like this one.

Our crew worked efficiently to pour and place each load down the slope safely and with minimal disruption. That old “just wheel it” attitude might seem basic, but when it’s done right, it’s incredibly reliable, clean, and helps everyone finish on time.

What Made the Difference?

A few things stood out on this job:

Flexible thinking: We didn’t force a standard solution where it didn’t fit, we adapted.

Experienced team: Our guys knew how to manage the mixes, keep them flowing, and avoid waste.

Client-first service: We worked around site constraints without sacrificing quality. We always go the extra mile.

Another Job Done Well

From foundation pours to garden paths and everything in between, we pride ourselves on being the team that doesn’t just turn up, but figures it out. Every project has its quirks — and every successful delivery makes us even better at what we do.

If you’re planning a job in Manchester, Macclesfield, or across the North West and need concrete delivered to a challenging site, give us a shout — we’ve got the experience to match your needs.

This project plays an important role in maintaining and improving the city’s transport infrastructure, helping to keep stations safe, durable, and fit for the future.

At Sheridan Concrete, we pride ourselves on being flexible, reliable, and ready to deliver when others can’t, and a recent project outside Stockport Train Station is a perfect example of that commitment.

We recently finished a 4’m3 just outside Stockport Train Station, and it was one of those jobs that really reminded us why we do what we do.

A Manchester-based construction company gave us a call. They needed a very specific 22:00 pour out-of-hours work that most suppliers can’t or won’t do. In fact, they had rung six other concrete companies before us, and none could make it happen. But we could.

Our team turned up on time, got the pour done efficiently, and made sure everything went smoothly, even with the unusual timing and busy surroundings. The client could carry on with their project without any delays, and we were happy to step in and help when others couldn’t.

It’s projects like this that show what Sheridan Concrete is all about: flexibility, reliability, and getting the job done right, no matter what time it is.

If you’ve got a tricky pour or a tight schedule, we’ll do our best to make it happen.
